Art Garfunkel surprised Garth Brooks when the country superstar
was presented with ASCAP's prestigious Golden Note Award on
Washington's Capitol Hill Tuesday night (March 12). Brooks
was recognized for his outstanding contributions to American
music as a performer and songwriter.
The award ceremony was highlighted by a musical tribute featuring
friends and fans of Brooks from the songwriting and performing
world, including Hal David, who performed "Raindrops
Keep Fallin' On My Head"; David Gates (formerly of Bread),
who sang "If"; Cy Coleman, who sang a medley of
"Hey, Look Me Over," and "If My Friends Could
See Me Now"; Beth Nielsen Chapman, who performed "Sand
And Water"; Alan Bergman, who sang "The Way We Were";
Jimmy Webb, who performed "By The Time I Get To Phoenix";
and Pat Alger, who performed "Unanswered Prayers,"
which he co-wrote with Brooks for the artist's 1990 album
No Fences. After staying out of view during the evening, Art
Garfunkel came out as a surprise guest and sang "America
The Beautiful."
The invitation-only event was also attended by several other
artists and songwriters such as Trisha Yearwood and Tom Paxton,
as well as several members of Congress, including Senators
Orrin Hatch and Patrick Leahy. |
